Has anyone else had this happen? You’re on a perfectly normal first date and then suddenly it gets weird because they introduce you to their parents? And not in the sense of you just do a quick introduction; as in, you are expected to make a lengthy conversation with the parents.
Let me back up and tell you how I got here. This is a date originating on OKCupid so our first meet up was not one where I was picking her up at her house or vice versa. I live in a pretty highly populated metropolitan area so we used the train to get to one another. We agreed on a train station to meet at and went out for Thai food at a restaurant nearby. I know, the tales of romance. We had great conversation and I was so excited when she asked if I wanted to hang out and walk around town afterwards (please note this event did take place in the past so it was actually nice out). As we were walking, I realized that nature was calling and I had to go to use the little lesbian’s room. So I asked my date if she knew of any place with a non-scary bathroom nearby since she was from the area and she told me there was a place that was close by. My bladder leaped for joy.
After walking for a few blocks, we entered into an apartment building and I got a little scared and confused. I figured at least my bladder was going to be emptied some way. As we walked in, I did have the thought to ask where we were. She answered that we were at her office building and that we would just stop there to use the bathroom. Sigh of relief. That’s not too bad. But I walked in and saw an apartment. A home office, without the office part. And not only am I now in someone’s home, I am also face-to-face with a woman who my date greeted as “mom”. Oh boy. Well, oh girl. I am literally doing that little pee-pee dance that five-year-olds do, so I quickly ask where the bathroom is and beeline my way there. I take care of my business and then just stand there, wondering what exactly I got myself into. I head back out and figure I know where the door is and I have the ability to run if it gets too weird. So, I say hi to the mom and then the date invites me to sit down and join them for conversation. Conversation starts pretty awkwardly, as my date comes pretty close to reciting my dating profile word-for-word to her mother to introduce me. We stay for a full 30 minutes before I make some lame reference to needing to catch the train to make it back. After I get on the train, I fully processed the situation and decided it wouldn’t be necessary to go on a second date.

OK, I know this situation was extreme. I do also know I’m lucky to not have been murdered. But besides my luck and the fact that this was an extreme situation, the idea of what happened hasn’t actually been unique to this girl. The last date I wrote about on here also had the idea that I should meet her mom if we hung out longer. And I’ve had a girlfriend call her mom the day we decided to be official and have me talk to her on the phone so I could be approved of. (We were away at college and meeting in person wasn’t possible. Darn.) So, dear wordpressers, is there something about me that is mom material or has anyone else had something like this happen?
Peace. Love. Lesbians.
